The name Conclavo originates from the Latin conclavus, which referred to a locked chamber used for private deliberation. Its root words are con meaning “together” and clavis meaning “key,” describing a room secured by key where only designated participants were permitted entry. From these origins came the phrase cum clave, “under key,” which defined the secluded gatherings where cardinals selected a new pontiff. These assemblies were known for their guarded environment, disciplined approach, and the weight of the decisions made within them.
Conclavo draws on this heritage as we study a modern landscape in which influence is consolidated and outcomes hinge on the choices of a select group.
